VAT + Import

Postby Steve G » Mon Jul 11, 2016 9:23 am

Just a FYI: received the DHL invoice for my large tooli (shipment to Belgium, 21% VAT)

17,55€ Duty + 305,26€ VAT for a total of 322,81€ on top of the purchase + shipment

Perhaps you can use it as an indication if you get the question how much shipment to Belgium costs.
If this had been via the regular Belgian mail (USPS alike) it would've been over 400€, that much I can guarantee you.

Thanks for sharing Steve. We'll keep this info on record.

21% VAT is very high, in Australia it is only 10%. I'm glad you were only charged 17,55€ Duty, that seems very reasonable.

In Germany it was a total addition of about 280 Euro. (19 VAT + some fees for DHL).
I called DHL (import devision) in advanced with my shipping number and asked them how much I had to pay. Surprisingly they said I had to pay 0 Euro. Few days later DHL rang at my door and wanted ~280 Euro cash. I estimated 300 Euro, so it was ok for me.

BTW: roughly one day from Autralia to Germany. 7 days at customs (with several phone calls and emails) and 3 days for delivery.

Thailand was much cheaper, DHL lost the first shipment and the second one cost 0% duties and 7% VAT + DHL charges. In all it was about $ 145 USD
